With so many choices available, there is almost no obvious difference between PVC garden hose pipes, and it is easy to choose the cheapest one. However, small differences will have a significant influence on the service life and convenience of the hose. A good PVC garden hose pipe should be able to be used for 5 to 10 years. But due to leaks, cracks, or rot, many homeowners who purchase inferior hoses replace them every year. Although some problems can be repaired, it is generally more cost-effective to buy a quality hose first.
The longer the length, the better. PVC garden hose pipes are available in lengths of 25, 50, 75, and 100 feet. It is tempting to buy a longer hose and use it for all watering needs around the garden. But don't do this. Longer hoses are not only more expensive, but also heavier to move, require more storage space, are difficult to drain before storing them in the winter, and may result in reduced water pressure in the end.
Measure the distance farthest from the tap and then buy a hose that is just over that distance. You don't want to pull the hose to lengthen it, as this can cause it to become stuck or leak. On decks or balconies, a 25-foot-long PVC garden hose pipe is usually adequate. Most urban yards only need a 50-foot-long hose at most. If you need a hose longer than 50 feet, consider buying two hoses and connecting them together when you need more than 50 feet. This way, you won't have to drag a long and heavy PVC garden hose pipe all the time.
Hose diameter width, water flow. The most common PVC garden hose pipe diameters are three-fourths inch, five-eighths inch, and half-inch. These measurements are based on the hose's interior diameter, not exterior. The larger the diameter, the more water the hose carries. The width of an eight-fifths-inch hose is usually the most useful. This is a good combination of water flow and pressure, and it is not too heavy. If hose weight is a problem for you, then a half-inch hose may be the best. They are often lighter in weight, but because of their smaller diameter, they cannot carry as much water. A half-inch PVC garden hose pipe is best kept to 50 feet or less, for light gardening tasks like watering containers and hanging baskets. These hoses are not suitable for use with sprinklers or anything that requires higher water pressure (like washing a car).
